The hat that I wore in Meet Me in St. Louis when Judy and I did the cake walk, and I have always admired this hat. So it come about first I wanted a red velvet dress, that she wore in the ballroom scene. I was 7 and I wanted the dress like Judy. So after the movie Judy had the dress made for me, and I kept wearing this dress to the commissary were we would go to eat. The red velvet dress that Judy gave me and two guns from Belle Starr. And Mr Mayer said “If I see that red velvet dress one more time from Meet Me in St. Louis, so I’m gonna give you a race horse”. He gave me the race horse, but it started winning races to he took it back. I went to Judy and I cried and I said ‘I don’t have my race horse and Mr Mayer took my red velvet dress’ and she said ‘Well that’s Mr Mayer for you, but I have something else for you, and this is the straw hat from the Cake Walk, I hope this makes up for your race horse’. She was so kind to me and so sweet to children.
